The new Yahoo! Messenger allowed messages to be unsent, deleting them from both the sender and the receiver's messaging page. It was basic in functionality, adding a heart when clicked and listing contacts who added a like. The new Yahoo! Messenger added a like button to messages and media. The animated GIF feature integrates with Tumblr, owned by Yahoo! It also allows album sharing, with multiple media files in one IM. Since the software's relaunch, only certain media files can be shared: photos, animated GIFs and videos. Yahoo! Messenger offered file sending capabilities to its users.

1.4 Group conversations (formerly Yahoo! Chat).

Yahoo! Messenger was shut down entirely on July 17, 2018, replaced by a new service titled Yahoo! Together, only to be shut down as well in 2019. The service also offered VoIP, file transfers, webcam hosting, a text messaging service, and chat rooms in various categories. Yahoo! Messenger was provided free of charge and could be downloaded and used with a generic 'Yahoo ID' which also allowed access to other Yahoo! services, such as Yahoo! Mail. Yahoo! Messenger (sometimes abbreviated Y!M) was an advertisement-supported instant messaging client and associated protocol provided by Yahoo!.
